Metaphors for God Have Sprung from Specific Historical Settings
Prophets in the seventh century BCE spoke of Israel as God’s bride. This image of God as the male spouse of Israel was extremely useful in suppressing the polytheism that had made it impossible to eradicate the injustices of child sacrifice and temple prostitution.
What metaphors might provide similar power in our own time to combat our own injustices? What dangers exist in continuing to use old metaphors after the historical context that made them useful has passed away?
